Compress PDF

Make PDF files smaller in your browser. Choose compression quality or a target size, then download your PDFs.

How to Compress a PDF

Set up your files, choose compression, and download the finished PDFs.

  1. 1

    Select your PDFs

Add PDF files from your device. Select a file to see its first page before processing.

  2. 2

    Choose quality or file size

Use a compression preset, adjust the exact quality, or enter a target in KB or MB. Quality mode shows an approximate size.

  3. 3

    Compress and download

Process files one at a time. Download a PDF or a ZIP of completed files. You can cancel and continue the remaining queue.

PDF Compression for Everyday Documents

Use local processing and clear controls while understanding the limits of a rebuilt PDF.

01

Two ways to set compression

Choose how much JPEG detail to retain, or let a bounded search aim for a file size.

  • Light, Medium, and Strong presets with exact quality control
  • Targets in KB or MB, with no guarantee for very small sizes
  • Single approximate size estimate for the selected PDF
02

Smaller copies for document uploads

Prepare visual copies of scanned pages and office exports for size-limited upload forms.

  • Pages keep their physical size and visible orientation
  • Fixed 96 DPI rebuild with local MozJPEG encoding
  • Text selection, search, forms, links, and bookmarks are not retained
03

Manage several PDF attachments

Process a small batch with individual results, so a failed file does not remove finished work.

  • Append files and switch the selected preview
  • Download one PDF or a ZIP of completed files
  • Original retained when compression does not make it smaller
04

Keep files on your device

PDF parsing, rendering, and compression run in your browser. Saved tasks stay in local browser storage.

  • No PDF upload to a processing server
  • Cancel, refresh, and resume pending files on the same device
  • Signature confirmation before creating an unsigned copy

PDF Compression Questions

Understand output quality, targets, signatures, and local task recovery.

Does my PDF leave my device?
No. Parsing, preview, rendering, and compression run in your browser. The PDF is not sent to a processing server. Task files are stored locally for recovery on the same device. Error monitoring uses limited technical categories and numbers, not filenames or document content.
Will the compressed PDF keep searchable text?
A rebuilt PDF contains page images. It does not keep selectable or searchable text, links, bookmarks, accessibility structure, or interactive form fields. Supported visible appearances are drawn into the page. If the original is retained, its original structure remains intact.
How does Quality affect the result?
Quality controls the JPEG encoding of each rendered page. Pages use a fixed 96 DPI. A higher percentage can preserve more image detail, but it cannot restore detail lost during rasterization. The size estimate is approximate and does not promise an exact reduction.
Can I compress to an exact size?
By Size samples up to two pages and performs a bounded search using the complete serialized PDF size. A small target may be impossible at the fixed resolution. The tool keeps a valid output available even when it exceeds the requested size; it may retain a smaller original.
Why is my original PDF returned?
A valid original that already meets your target is returned without rebuilding. The original is also retained when rebuilding does not produce a smaller PDF. Validation still checks the PDF, encryption, and page limit. An unchanged result is a valid downloadable file.
What happens to digital signatures?
Rebuilding invalidates digital signatures and removes signature fields from the new PDF. The tool asks for confirmation before rewriting a PDF with a signature or signature field. You can skip that file and continue the batch. An original already within the target does not need rewrite confirmation.
Can I cancel or restore a batch?
Yes. Cancel stops the current file and keeps earlier completed PDFs. Pending items can be continued, and failed items can be retried. Refresh restores committed results and pending work from this browser on the same device. Storage failures stop the queue and require a retry before refreshing.
Which PDFs and devices are supported?
Use valid, unlocked PDFs within the displayed upload limits. Page, pixel, decoded-content, and memory limits also apply. Some forms, XFA documents, inline images, or complex resources are rejected when safe rendering cannot be budgeted. Large scans can exceed limits even if their file size is small.

Make Your PDFs Easier to Share

Select your PDFs and choose quality or a target size. Keep your original whenever searchable text or a valid signature matters.
