What changes when I change image DPI?
The tool updates resolution metadata stored in a supported JPG or PNG. It does not change the image's pixel width or height, redraw details, or automatically alter the pixel data used on screens and websites.
Does increasing DPI improve image quality?
No. A higher metadata value cannot create new pixels or restore missing detail. It changes how software may calculate physical print size from the existing pixels, so actual sharpness still depends on source resolution.
Will changing DPI resize the image?
No. Pixel dimensions remain unchanged. Some layout or print applications may display a different physical size because they divide the same pixels by the new DPI value, but the underlying raster canvas stays identical.
Which DPI should I choose for printing?
Use the value requested by the printer, publisher, or submission portal. A common number alone does not guarantee quality; confirm that pixel dimensions divided by the chosen DPI still produce the required physical size.
What if my image has no DPI metadata?
You can assign a supported target value, but doing so only adds the missing resolution label. It does not reveal an original setting or improve the image, so evaluate its pixels against the intended print dimensions.
Why does physical print size change?
Print size is often calculated as pixel dimensions divided by DPI. Raising DPI makes the interpreted physical size smaller, while lowering it makes the size larger, even though the file contains the same number of pixels.
Can I set different horizontal and vertical DPI?
This workflow uses one target value for both axes, which matches most common print requirements. If a specialized system requires unequal horizontal and vertical resolution metadata, use a dedicated metadata editor.
Which image formats can be updated?
