Why convert an image to PNG?
PNG is broadly supported and uses lossless encoding, making it useful for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and graphics with sharp edges. It can also store transparency when the source and conversion path provide alpha data.
Can converting a JPG to PNG restore quality?
No. PNG prevents additional lossy encoding in the new file, but it cannot recreate detail discarded when the JPG was made. The converted pixels may be stored losslessly while existing blocks, ringing, or softness remain visible.
Will a JPG gain transparency as a PNG?
No. Changing the format does not automatically identify and remove a background. PNG can hold transparent pixels, but a JPG source contains a fully opaque image, so background removal must happen as a separate editing step.
Does PNG conversion keep the dimensions?
Yes. This converter preserves the source pixel width and height during the standard PNG export. If a document, interface, or upload form needs another canvas size, resize the image separately before using it.
Why can the PNG be larger than the source?
PNG stores pixels losslessly and may be inefficient for detailed photographs or noisy images. A small lossy JPG or WebP can therefore become a much larger PNG without gaining any detail that was missing from the source.
Is PNG best for screenshots and diagrams?
Often, because lossless encoding keeps text, thin rules, and flat-color boundaries crisp. For a photographic screenshot or a very large interface capture, compare WebP too if the destination accepts it and file weight matters.
Can I edit the converted PNG later?
Yes. PNG opens in most image editors and is a practical interchange format for finished raster graphics. Keep the layered design source as well, because converting a flattened image does not restore editable text or separate layers.
Should I use PNG for printed photos?
Only when the print service accepts it and there is a specific reason to use PNG. Many labs prefer JPG for photographs. Format conversion does not add pixels, so resolution, crop, aspect ratio, and color requirements still matter.
